Cuanto tiempo pasas dibujando antes de ir a pintar? En que te centras cuando dibujas?

How long do you spend sketching a piece before you go and paint? What
is your focus when you pic up the can?

Gasto bastante tiempo en bocetear. Realmente me gusta practicar mis dibujos sobre el papel porque soy un perfeccionista. Pienso que el boceto es necesario para tener una base sobre la cual desarrollar la pieza. Sin embargo, a veces tienes que improvisar y liberar el estilo, ya que cada muro es diferente.

Bocetear es algo que necesito hacer. Pienso que me ayuda a desarrollar mi estilo. Cuando miro mi blackbook, veo mi estilo desarrollarse. Por lo general, tengo aversión a mis propios bocetos después de un mes o dos. Para mí eso es una cosa positiva. Quiero ver progresión en todo que hago.

I spend quite some time on sketching. I really like to work out my sketches on paper because I am a perfectionist. For me it works well to use a sketch as the basis for a piece. However, sometimes you have to improvise and free style, since every wall is different.
Also sketching is just something I just have to do. I believe it helps me to develop my style. When I look through my blackbooks I see my style evolving. Usually, I dislike my own sketches after a month or two. For me that is a positive thing. I want to see progression in everything that I do.

¿Puedes hablarnos un poco sobre los love letters?

Can you tell us a little about loveletters crew?

La crew LoveLetters fue fundada en diciembre de 2006 en Sittard, una ciudad en el sur de Holanda. Es un colectivo de diez escritores europeos de Alemania, Suiza, Francia y Países Bajos. Comenzo con 4 miembros - Tumki, Nash, Chas, Does - y se ha agrandado gracias a algunos escritores que se han unido a la crew (Dare, Dater, Ozer, Sean2, Biser y Rusl). Todos los miembros se han desarrollado desde escritores de graffiti a artistas creativos. Sus actividades incluyen, entre otros: el diseño gráfico, el diseño de web, el tatuaje y la fotografía. Cada escritor tiene su propia especialización, que hace una crew realmente única y diversa.

The loveletters crew was founded in december 2006 in Sittard, a city in the south os Holland. The crew is a creative collective of ten European writers from Germany, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands. We satarted out with 4 members - Tumki, Nash, Chas y Does - and expanded by inviting individuals writers to join the crew (Dare, Dater, Ozer, Sean2, Biser and Rusl). All the members have evolves froma graffiti writers to creative artist. Their current activities include, amongst other: graphic design, web design, tatto, and photography. Each writer has his own expertise, which makes for a truly unique and diverse crew.

¿Que se siente al ser parte de los loveletters y de la crew ironlak, esto cambio el modo de ver tu trabajo?

How has being part of the loveletters and ironlak crews changed
the way you look at your work?

Las dos crews tratan de juntarse varias veces al año y hacer algun muro juntos. El estar al lado de otros buenos escritores me estimula a mejorar mi propio trabajo.

Both crews try to get together several times a year to paint a wall together. Being around other talented writers stimulates me to improve my own work.

¿Cuál ha sido la cosa mas rara que te ha pasado mientras estabas pintando (alguna historia de guerra)?

What has been the craziest thing that has happened to you while you were painting (any war stories)?

Mi experiencia mas rara fue en un trabajo en los ghettos de Bogotá, Colombia: Las Cruzas. La policía nos escoltó en el ghetto donde fuimos capaces de hacer una muro mientras la policía nos vigilaba y admiraba nuestro trabajo. Mientras tanto muchos niños se reunieron para mirarnos. La mayor parte de ellos parecieron estar realmente interesados, mientras otros intentaban robarnos las latas o nuestras mochilas.

My craziest experience would be my paint-job in the ghettos of Bogota, Colombia: Las Cruzas. Police escorted us into the ghetto where we were able to do a wall while the police watched our backs and admired our work. Meanwhile lots of kids gathered to watch us. Most of them seemed to be truly interested, while some tried to steal our cans or our bags.

¿Cuál es tu ciudad favorita para pintar? ¿Has estado en todas las partes del mundo donde te gustaria pintar o hay alguna en la que no has podido estar?

What has been your favorite place to paint? Is there anywhere that you
would like to paint that you have not had a chance?
Realmente me gusta visitar países extranjeros y conocer gente nueva. Es una de las mejores cosas del graffiti.

El año pasado visité Nueva York y pinté bajo un puente. Que era también la casa de varios drogadictos, había muchas agujas por el alrededor. Fue una situacion de miedo y muy buena.

También visité Colombia. Es realmente un paraíso para los escritores; puedes pintar por todas las partes donde tu quieras.

I really love to visit foreign countries and meet new people. That is one of the great things about graffiti.
Last year I visited New York and I painted under a bridge. This place was also home to several drug addicts, so there were a lot of needles lying around. That was a scary and great experience.
I also visited Colombia last year. That is truly a writers’ paradise; you can paint almost everywhere you like.

Tienes algun producto favorito para tus piezas, bocetos, cuadros?

Do you have favorite art products that you use?

Cuando hago bocetos a color uso varios materiales, como acrílicos, lápiz y spray. Trabajo sobre superficies muy diferentes: papel, pared, tela, skate y ropa. Cuando trabajo sobre la tela uso pincel. Que es un material completamente diferente al spray, lo que lo hace aún más interesante.

When I make full colour sketches I use various materials, such as acrylics, pencil and spray paint. I work on different surfaces: paper, wall, canvas, skatedecks and clothing. When I work on canvas I use a brush. This is completely different than a spraycan, which makes it all the more interesting.

¿Sientes que tienes un estilo propio? ¿Buscas llevar tus trabajos a algun sitio concreto o solo haces que fluya con naturalidad?

Do you feel that you have a definite style? Do you purposefully push your work in a certain direction or does it just flow naturally?
Mi estilo no es propio, creo que no me define. Quiero ir superandome cada semana y en mi vision y seguir mejorando. Hace unos años hice agunas piezas de 3D y me enfoqué los efectos. Ahora, me centro mas en cada letra por separado.

My style is certainly not definite. I want to get better every week and in my view getting better means changing. A few years ago I did some 3D pieces and I focused on the effects. Now, I focus more on every letter separately.
